Meet Dr. Awaya M.D.

Darin J Awaya, M.D. was born and raised in Kailua, Hawaii and graduated from Iolani High School in 1990. He attended UCLA and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry. Dr. Awaya returned home to attend John A. Burns School of Medicine Upon graduation in 1999, he completed his surgical internship at the University of Hawaii Residency Program where he was honored as intern of the year. Dr. Awaya left Hawaii for the UC Davis Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program in Sacramento and graduated in 2005 with the distinction of winning the Tim Bray Trauma Award. Dr. Awaya also completed a Spine Surgery fellowship in Sacramento under the mentorship of Dr. Dan Benson and Dr. Munish Gupta. Academic appointments in Sacramento also included Shriners Children’s Northern California where he developed an interest in scoliosis/deformity surgery.

Meet the Family

Following residency, Dr. Awaya spent a year in California at Mercy Medical Group starting a spine surgery program. As was always his intent, he then moved home to Hawaii to raise his children and started a private practice on Oahu in 2007.

Outside of work, Dr. Awaya enjoys spending his free time with his four children. He holds a deep passion for the ocean, and cherishes any opportunity to go surfing and fishing with longtime friends and family.
